VOL 1
GERUND FORM

O gerúndio sempre causou confusão durante o aprendizado da língua inglesa, visto que ele pode representar mais do que o tempo progressivo, como por exemplo:

1. A forma de substantivo de algum verbo:
To train = treinar / training = treinamento

2. O verbo no papel de sujeito no início de uma frase:
Playing tennis is fun. (Jogar tênis é divertido).

3. A forma infinitiva do verbo quando seguido de alguns verbos ou preposições:
I enjoy getting up early. (Eu aprecio levantar cedo).

4. A forma de adjetivo de algum verbo:
This book is very interesting. (Este livro é muito interessante).

São mais de 70 páginas esclarecendo todas as dúvidas acerca deste tema, com explicações em português e exemplos.

Férias Frustradas de Natal

Uma cena rápida e divertida na noite de Natal. Have Fun!!!

Clark - Honey.

Uncle Lewis - I told you, you had too many plugs in one outlet.

Clark - Oh God.

Aunt Bethany - What is it?

Ellen - Nothing. Let's go in and finish our dessert.

Cousin Eddie - If that thing had nine lives, she just spent them all. If you don't mind Clark, I'd like to see if I can fumigate this here chair. It's a good quality item. If you don't mind me asking, how much it set you back?

Clark -Do you smell something?

Cousin Eddie - Fried pussycat.

_______________________________________

Como este diálogo é muito curto, vou fazer somente algumas observações:

1 - ...too many plugs in one outlet

Este é uma frase muito comum no dia a dia. Quem nunca teve muitos "plugs" em um único "outlet"?
"Plug" significa o conector macho.
"Outlet" em termos elétricos, significa a tomada fêmea.

2 - Fumigate = fumigar

3 - If you don't mind me asking, how much it set you back

O verbo na forma "ing" é sempre empregado após pronomes pessoais e nomes de pessoas em linguagem informal, então a frase: If you don't mind me asking = Se você não se importar que eu pergunte

Outros exemplos:
Do you mind me smoking?
Importa-se que eu fume?

I appreciate you coming here today.
Eu agradeço a tua vinda aqui hoje.

I don’t approve Mary sharing a flat.
Eu não aprovo que a Maria partilhe o mesmo apartamento.

"Set back" é um "phrasal verb" que significa = custar

Mr. Ammer - Congratulations. Sit down, big guy.

Mr. Ammer - You really knocked one out of the park last night, didn't you?

Michael - Hey, you were great too.

A vida em um dia

Oi Pessoal,
Hoje, dia 5 de novembro é comemorado o Dia do Cinema Brasileiro. Em homenagem a este dia, resolvi colocar um curta que eu encontrei no Youtube. Ele já está com a legenda em inglês. Tem umas sentenças bem úteis, vale a pena conferir.

TOP 10 SENTENCES
Bem, nem preciso traduzir porque vocês já assistiram ao video, só vou fazer algumas observações:

1 - We are alike
O oposto de "alike = igual" é "unlike = diferente".

2 - Everything is getting smaller
Neste caso a tradução foi: ficando menor, porém se quisessemos dizer: cada vez menor usaríamos: getting smaller and smaller.

Outros exemplos:
Ele está ficando cada vez mais bonito. = He is getting more and more beautiful.
Está ficando cada vez mais quente. = It's getting hotter and hotter.
Ela está ficando cada dia mais alta. = She is getting taller and taller.

3 - This may seem like an excuse
Há algumas palavras em inglês que podem ser usadas com substantivos ou verbos. Como no caso de excuse.
O que difere estas palavras e a pronúncia.
Excuse, with the S sounding like S in See, is a noun.
Excuse, with the S sounding like Z in Zebra, is a verb.
O mesmo acontece com outras palavras como:

House, with the S sounding like S in See, is a noun.
House, with the S sounding like Z in Zebra, is a verb.

Use, with the S sounding like S in See, is a noun.
Use, with the S sounding like Z in Zebra, is a verb.

Abuse, with the S sounding like S in See, is a noun.
Abuse, with the S sounding like Z in Zebra, is a verb.

Close, with the S sounding like S in See, is an adjective.
Close, with the S sounding like Z in Zebra, is a verb.

OBS: Em geral quando não tem a letra "S" a diferença se dá pela enfâse na pronúncia.
Quando substantivos = ênfase na primeira sílaba
Quando verbos = ênfase na segunda sílaba

Exemplos:
OBject = obJECT
PREsent = preSENT
PROgress = proGRESS
PROject = proJECT
REcord = reCORD
SUBject = subJECT

4 - Mindless is the devil place
O sufixo "less" passa a idéia de falta, ausência.
Outros exemplos:
Homeless = sem-teto
Careless = descuidado
Meaningless = sem sentido
Painless = indolor
Useless = inútil

5 - He has not been used to me so far
"So Far", na realidade significa "até agora". Sabem aquela expressão: So far so good (Até agora tudo bem).

6 - Trust is conquered over time
Over time = ao longo do tempo
Diferente de:
Overtime = horas extras

7 - It is funny
Não devemos nos esquecer que sempre utilizamos o "IT" quando o sujeito é indefinido.
Assim como em: It's raining = Está chovendo.

8 - We are not still happy enough
"Still" e "Yet" significam = ainda. Porém "still" é mais usado quando algo está acontecendo ou na afirmativa. Já "yet" é mais utilizado quando algo ainda não aconteceu, ou seja, acontecerá no futuro, ou na negativa e interrogativa.

9 - ...ending up with nothing
O "phrasal verb = end up" que significa acabar, terminar; pode ser usado:
End up with + noun = acabar com + substantantivo
End up in + noun = acabar em + substantivo
End up + adjective = acabar + adjetivo

10 - Sheninagans has no explanation
Perceba nesta frase que há duas formas de estruturar uma frase na negativa.
Poderia ser: Sheninagans don't have explanations.

Outros exemplos:
I didn't have a car.
I had no car.

I don't have money.
I have no money.

Os Incríveis

Olá pessoal, nesta semana temos um vídeo do filme "The Incredibles". A cena é com a Edna (a estilista que confecciona as fantasias).

Então vamos ao vídeo:

BOB: Jeez.

HELEN: Hurry, honey. Or you'll be late for work.

HELEN: Have a great day, honey.

BOB: Thanks.

HELEN: Help customers, climb ladders...

BOB: Bring bacon?

HELEN: All that jazz.

GUARD: You have an appointment?

BOB: I'm an old friend. I just wanted to...

GUARD: All visitors are required to make a reser--

EDNA: Get back to work! Go check the electric fence or something! What is it? Who are you? What do you want?

EDNA: My God, you've gotten fat. Come in. Come, come.

EDNA: Yes, things are going quite well. Quite well. My God, no complaints. But, you know, it is not the same. Not the same at all.

BOB: Weren't you just in the news? Some show in Prayge... Prague?

EDNA: Milan, darling. Milan. Supermodels. Ha! Nothing super about them. Spoiled, stupid, little stick figures with poofy lips who think only about themselves. Feh! I used to design for gods. But perhaps you come with a challenge, eh? I was surprised to get your call.

BOB: E, I just need a patch job.

EDNA: Hmm. This is megamesh. Outmoded, but very sturdy. And you've torn right through it! What have you been doing, Robert? Moonlighting hero work?

BOB: Must have happened a long time ago.

EDNA: I see. This is a hobo suit, darling. You can't be seen in this. I won't allow it! Fifteen years ago, maybe, but now?

BOB: What do you mean? You designed it.

EDNA: I never look back, darling. It distracts from the now. You need a new suit. That much is certain.

BOB: A new suit? Where the heck am I gonna get a new suit?

EDNA: You can't! It's impossible! I'm far too busy. So ask me now, before I again become sane.

BOB: Wait. You want to make me a suit?

EDNA: You push too hard, darling! But I accept. It will be bold. Dramatic!

BOB: Yeah.

EDNA: Heroic!

BOB: Yeah, something classic, like Dynaguy! Oh! He had a great look! Oh, the cape and the boots...

EDNA: No capes!

BOB: Isn't that my decision?

EDNA: Do you remember Thunderhead? Tall, storm powers. Nice man. Good with kids.

BOB: Listen, E...

EDNA: November 15th of '58. All was well, another day saved when his cape snagged on a missile fin.

BOB: Thunderhead was not the brightest bulb...

EDNA: Stratogale! April 23rd, '57. Cape caught in a jet turbine.

BOB: E, you can't generalize about these things.

EDNA: Meta-man, express elevator. Dynaguy, snag on Takeoff. Splashdown, sucked into a vortex. No capes! Now, go on. Your new suit will be finished before your next assignment.
